Tata Power loses water resource to Bhima basin
The state government?s decision of diverting water from Tata Power?s hydropower station in Pune district towards the Bhima basin will make the power generator water deficient. Tata Power supplies around 1,700 MW to Mumbai, of which nearly 447 MW is hydropower generated from six dams in Pune district? Mulshi, Bhushi, Bhira, Valvand, Thokarwadi and Shirvate. Nearly 42.50 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water is diverted to the Konkan region after power generation. However, activists demand to release the water into the dry Bhima basin. The state government has appointed a nine-member committee, including a Tata Power representative to suggest how water can be diverted in a phased manner.
