New terminal at Trichy Airport to be completed by 2021

Work on the proposed terminal building at the Trichy International Airport is expected to be completed by September 2021. The proposed terminal will have a capacity to handle more than 3.6 million passengers per annum (mppa). As reported, the new terminal will have a two-level air conditioned modular integrated building, built over an area of 61, 634 sq m.

Chennai airport has stagnated in terms of passenger and cargo traffic. Hence, Trichy airport will act as an alternative to tackle the overflow from Chennai airport, and the existing terminal is reportedly to be used for cargo handling. Local art and culture have given inspiration to the terminal roof, column cladding, flooring patterns, feature walls as well as the signage design.

The terminal building will be built following GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) four-star standards. The design is a sustainable one, maximising the use of natural light within the building. It also adopts renewable energy measures such as photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting and ground source heat pumps.

The terminal has passive design features and 100 per cent LED lighting control through Building Management System (BMS). Use of energy efficient E&M equipment and fixtures in the terminal, and also electricity generating solar photo voltaic system will be mounted on the roof top. The new terminal can be expanded without affecting the existing structure, since it will be a modular type. As reported, there were plans for more energy generation through all means possible, so that the surplus energy can be utilised for the society.

According to reports, AAI plans to handle cargo from Trichy with the help of wide-body aircraft. Establishing connection to European cities is also being planned.
