Kerala?s Kannur airport gets DGCA clearance

The Kannur International Airport has received clearance from the The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which will be Kerala?s fourth airport, in addition to Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Reportedly, six domestic and 11 international airlines have shown interest in carrying out services from Kannur airport.

The airport is spread across 2,300 acre and developed at an expense of Rs 22.92 billion. It is expected to serve more than one million passengers per annum (mppa) and is reportedly to increase by five times by 2025.

The airport is equipped with a solar power system and has got an LEED gold rating for energy and environment conservation.

Works on terminal, building, runway and airside facilities are finished. The terminal building includes features such as HHMD (hand-held metal detector), DFMD (door frame metal detector), baggage handling system, inline X-ray machine, check-in counters, passenger boarding bridge, immigration check-points, lifts and escalators. As reported, land acquisition process is under execution for extending the length of the runway to 4,000 m.

Reportedly, a four-storey airport office, an international air cargo complex, a five-storey CISF residential complex, a 23-km-long road along the boundary walls, lighting facilities and landscape beautification is expecting completion within a time frame of one and a half years. According to reports, all the required measures for starting commercial operations at the airport will be completed by the end of this year.
