India signs $150-million loan agreement with ADB for first global skills park

Government of India has signed a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) worth $150 million to develop a global skills park (GSP) in Madhya Pradesh, the first such multi-skills park in India. This is done to improve the quality of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system in the state and facilitate a more skilled workforce.

As reported, the signatories to the Madhya Pradesh Skills Development Project comprised of Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs (Fund Bank and ADB), Ministry of Finance, who signed on behalf of the Government of India, and Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director of ADB?s India Resident Mission, signing for ADB. The project is expected to better the standard of the state?s TVET programmes. Apart from that, it will also help in providing modern job-ready skills training of international standards, that are capable of matching the employment requirements of the state?s upcoming sectors.

According to reports, the project also aims to let TVET partners participate in order to provide advanced training at the GSP, which, in turn, will bring global best practices relating to TVET industry co-operation, management, training infrastructure and quality assurance.

The GSP campus is going to come up in Bhopal. It will have advanced training institutes along with the Centre for Occupational Skills Acquisition and the Centre for Advanced Agricultural Training. There will also be other support services which will reportedly emphasise on entrepreneurship, training of trainers and skill-related research. According to reports, the project will work towards upgrading 10 industrial training institutes across the state through modernisation of training infrastructure and skills courses, to meet the industry and market needs. There will reportedly be training facilities for skill development of service, manufacturing and advanced agricultural jobs.
