Over 7 Million FASTags Sold as Sales Shoot Up By 300%

Over 7 million FASTags have been issued to date, with the highest issuance of 135,583 tags taking place on November 26. The average daily issuance has grown by a whopping 330 per cent from 8,000 in July to 35,000 thousand tags sold in November. Following the announcement of a waiver on FASTag cost from November 21, there has been a growth in its issuance by over 130 per cent.

The National Electronic Toll Collection (FASTag) programme, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is being implemented on a pan-India basis in order to remove bottlenecks and ensure seamless movement of traffic and collection of user fee as per the notified rates, using passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. To give a major fillip to enhance digital payments and bring in enhanced transparency, it has been mandated to declare all lanes of fee plazas on National Highways as ?FASTag Lanes? by December 1, while provisioning one lane in each direction as a hybrid lane to accept FASTag and other modes of payment.

With the above mandate, average daily transactions processed through FASTag have grown from 880,000 in July this year to 112,000 transactions in November 2019, while the average daily collection has grown from Rs 112 million to Rs 195 million for the given period.

FASTag is currently accepted at over 560 toll plazas, with more getting added regularly.
