Railways Pulls Freight Traffic Ahead of 2019 Level Despite COVID-19 Challenges

Indian Railways managed to pull freight traffic ahead of last year?s levels despite the challenges thrown up by the COVID-19 pandemic. On August 19, 2020, the freight loading by the public sector transporter was 3.11 million tonnes (MT), which was higher than 2.97 MT for the same date in 2019, a Ministry of Railways release has said. The Railways earned Rs 3.06 billion from freight loading, which was Rs 52.8 million higher than last year for the same date.

In the month of August 2020, till August 19, the total freight loading was 57.47 MT, which was higher than last year for the same period (53.65 MT). The Railways earned Rs 54.61 billion from freight loading which was Rs 259 million higher than last year for the same period.

Asia?s second-largest rail transporter has been increasing the speed and volume of goods carried in a bid to grow its logistics business. The Railways will be promoting its freight service to make traders, businesses and suppliers aware of the benefits associated with rail transportation.
