Construction of the world?s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad underway

The construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium at Motera in Ahmedabad has been commenced. With a reported seating capacity of over one lakh, the first images of the stadium at its initial construction stage were shared by Gujarat Cricket Association Vice President Parimal Nathwani.

Build across 63 acre, the stadium is expected to have three practice pitches, an Olympic-size swimming pool, four dressing rooms, a clubhouse with over 50 rooms, 76 corporate boxes, and an indoor cricket academy. The new stadium will reportedly cost Rs 7 billion and can host up to 1.10 lakh people. The stadium is designed by renowned architect firm Populous, and the construction tender has been given to L&T. The parking area will accommodate nearly 3,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers. Besides, a concourse is expected to connect the entire stadium for pedestrian and vehicular movement.

The stadium will replace the Old Motera stadium, which hosts up to 53,000 people. The new stadium is expected to be completed sometime in 2019.

Moving ahead of Melbourne in terms of its seating capacity, the new stadium in Gujarat will be the largest in the world. Currently in India, the largest stadium is the Eden Gardens, which can host up to 66,349 people.
