MILESTONE MAN
Virender Kaul, Vice President, Afcons Infrastructure, has achieved a milestone for the Howrah station of the East-West Metro Project in Kolkata! With him leading as the Project Manager, the company has successfully completed excavation for setting up the underground Howrah station, which will be India’s deepest station at 100 ft below the surface. The base of the station will reportedly be at 105 ft and the platforms at 100 ft below the surface. Further, the Howrah station – reported to be at least a metre deeper than the proposed Esplanade station of the East-West corridor – will have five levels, across 40,000 sq m. Evidently, excavation of such a mega project is challenging; there are problems related to the excavation machines conking off, safety issues, etc. However, under Kaul’s leadership, Afcons has been successful in completing excavation for the Howrah station within just 13 months!
A true milestone recorded in underwater metro tunnelling in India.
