Shapoorji Pallonji proposes 1 lakh affordable homes in Maharashtra?s salt pan land

Reports indicate that the Maharashtra Government has received a proposal by Shapoorji Pallonji to build 1 lakh affordable homes. What is unique about the proposal is development of affordable homes on a salt pan land. This is a first time scenario for the state government and it has directed a five-member committee to examine the received proposal.

In the Development Plan 2034, the government had made provisions to open up 1,600 acre of salt pan lands for affordable housing on a PPP basis. Of over 5,000 acres of salt plan land, only 1,600 acre can be used for construction.

With reference to the proposal by Shapoorji Pallonji, the land is located in Kanjurmarg-Bhandup, adjoining the Eastern Express Highway. According to a notification reportedly issued by the Revenue and Forests Department: A five-member committee headed by the additional chief secretary, finance, will examine the proposal by the developer and submit a report within 60 days. Part of the examination will also include if the developers should be given the land by paying a premium or generating housing stock for the government.
