Tripura gets first non-recyclable plastic waste road

Construction of the first plastic road in Tripura, using non-recyclable plastic waste is underway as a part of the Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) project.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurated the plastic waste road by unveiling the plaque along with a few other projects of the ASCL during a program held at Agartala.

The minister told the media that the use of non-recyclable plastic waste in the construction of roads is aimed at reducing plastic waste and to make the environment plastic free.

Plastic waste and bitumen were collected, mixed and recycled, and used in constructing a 680 m long road at a cost of Rs 70 lakh in front of the Women's College near BK Road.

Shailesh Kumar Yadav, District Magistrate of West Tripura district and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ASCL said that the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) generates almost 19 tonne of plastic daily, and such initiatives are expected to help the authority in better managing the plastic waste.

Other projects undertaken by the Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) under the smart city mission were also inaugurated:

  • As many as 40 smart bus stops with CCTV cameras and emergency call boxes.
  • An open space with pathways for people to exercise and undertake other fitness activities built at the cost of Rs 95 lakh.
  • New footpaths constructed along several roads in the city.
