Highway construction in India increases 25% in Q1 FY22

Construction of highways in India witnessed a 25% increase in the first quarter of the current FY to 2,284 km at 25.37 km per day.

In the April-June period of 2019-20, highway construction was 23.29 km per day. The construction speed registered in the first three months of the current fiscal year was even higher than before.

The highest record accomplished in 2020-21 FY was 34.4 km per day. However, the construction pace in the first three months in the current fiscal is way behind as compared to 2020-21 fiscal.

Analysts attributed the record construction previous fiscal to a slew of industry-friendly actions that the government had proactively practised throughout the pandemic year, including those to make sure better cash flow to the builders.

The second wave of the Covid-19 hit the nation from the start of April. The speed of highway construction usually reaches its peak after the festive season.

Throughout the April-June time of the current fiscal, project awards also marginally grew to 1,681 km from 1,658 km in the same period last fiscal. However, in the same period of 2019-20, just 743 km project length was awarded.
