Panchkula to be transformed into a solar powered city

The Panchkula district administration is taking steps to turn the city into a solar powered city.

Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Sing issued an order to set up a 2 MW solar power plant on the seven acres land in Naggal village, Barwala. The generated power of 8,000 units will be supplied to the power department.

The administration also plans to set up 5 MW solar power on five government buildings. The generated power from these buildings will be balanced in the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) electricity bill.

The officials from the Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) are working on a 1 MW solar power plant project that needs at least three acres of land and an investment of Rs 3 crore.

The administration will replace street lights, government buildings lights, and government residential lights with Light-emitting diode (LED) lights. It plans to set up solar plates on all industrial units within the district.

According to an official, the goal is to generate 20% of the total 607 million units of everyday consumption in the district.

The industries or commercial units using 30 kW energy or above will have to install solar power systems. The power department is already prepared with a list of those units, and soon notices will be issued to them. The administration will cut down the electric connection for those units that fail to install solar power plants after three notices.

The administration also aims to initiate electric buses in the city with the Haryana Roadways Department. About five solar charging stations are to be built in the city to promote electric vehicles.

Residential buildings with an area of more than 500 sq metres will have to install a solar power plant for housing construction.
