Greenfield Airport in AP might be named Donyi Polo airport

The much-awaited and under-construction greenfield airport near Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, might be named Donyi Polo airport, as suggested by the state government.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu suggested the name to the Minister of Civil Aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

CM Khandu urged the consideration of the proposed name and said Scindia, that being the single airport in the state capital, it would be befitting to name the airport, celebrating people’s old indigenous reverence for the sun (Donyi) and the moon (Polo), Donyi Polo airport.

Arunachal Pradesh, also known as Hollongi airport, would be commissioned on 15 August 2022, on the national occasion of Independence Day.

The airport is spread over 320 hectares area. After completion, the greenfield airport would be able to accommodate narrow-body jets like the Airbus A321 in the first phase.

The Hollongi airport will hold strategic relevancy for India, and it will also have several sustainability features.

The airport will have one 2,300 m runway oriented east-west in the first phase to serve narrow aircraft, which can be extended to 2,800 m to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
