Delhi Airport to induce EVs at airside in four months

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) told the media that the Delhi Airport has decided to replace all its airport vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) in the next four months for its airside operations under the Green Transportation Program, targeting to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually from airport operations.

The plan is to install 62 EVs at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport's airside, including the runway, taxiway, and apron during the arrival and departure of flights. It will help reduce about 1,000 tonnes of GHG emissions per year.

DIAL announced the Green Transportation Program on World Environment Day.

The airport will also install high voltage and fast-charging stations at strategic locations to cater to the requirements of these vehicles and other airport stakeholders.

Earlier, DIAL has worked with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for this green initiative to make the required changes in the EVs to install airport-specific equipment. The company is working with the IGI stakeholders for smoother adoption of EVs at the airport. CEO of DIAL, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, said that the company has targeted to make Delhi Airport a Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport (NZCEA) by 2030. It has planned to eliminate all the light vehicles of petrol and diesel in a phased manner from the airport and use EVs instead.

He said that the airport has planned to source electricity from renewable energy sources to ensure even the charging process is emissions-free.

He said that the adoption of EVs for managing airport operations is a first-of-its-kind initiative by any Indian airport to ensure cleaner transport.

Recently, DIAL has facilitated electric buses for transporting passengers from Terminal 3 to the Passenger Transport Centre (PTC) building.
