Coal India floats tender for coal imports

On Wednesday Coal India Limited (CIL) floated an international competitive bidding e-tender, to seek bids for the import of 2.416 million tonne of coal.

An official statement said, the coal is being imported on behalf of the state generating companies (gencos) as well as independent power plants (IPPs) and is based on their indents for the July-September period of this fiscal year.

A provision in the tender exists to accommodate a variety of below or above 30% of the bid quantity. The coal imported is 5000 GAR (gross as received) thermal grade coal.

The government had nominated CIL as a centralised agency for increasing coal supplies to state gencos, and IPPs via import of coal when the demand for coal is high.

On June 2, CIL’s Board gave its nod for the proceeding with the issuance of two international tenders for importing coal from overseas, a short-term tender and a medium-term tender.

The short-term tender for coal import, for Q2 of FY23, is source agnostic, which means it can be sourced from any country.

The statement said although coal import is uncharted terrain for CIL, within a week of receiving indents from seven State Gencos and 19 IPPs, a total of 2.416 MT of coal, the company on a war footing has finalised and floated the tender.

The last date for the receipt of the bids is June 29.
