State highways dept fastracks construction work of 2 flyovers

The national highways wing of the state highways department has fast-tracked construction work of flyovers at GN Mills and Periyanaickenpalayam with the opening of two flyovers in the city last week.

The GN Mills flyover work will be finished in two months, while the Periyanaickenpalayam flyover will be completed by February next year.

The construction work for the GN Mills flyover began in March 2019. Earlier, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had decided to build a flyover on Mettupalayam Road at the GN Mills Junction and performed two pile load tests, which were inconclusive, and later the third pile load test was successful.

Subsequently, the NH authorities approved 30 crores for the project. The flyover is 17.2 m wide. It would have 14 spans, and works of 11 spans were achieved.

An official from the national highways wing told the media that they have asked the contractor to speed up the work, and we are planning to complete the work in August. More than 100 workers have been involved in construction work round the clock.

Once the flyover is opened to the public, traffic congestion will be a thing of the past at the GN Mills. For the Periyanaickenpalayam flyover, the Union government allocated 88 crores, and the work began in November 2020.

The flyover will start close to Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya and extend until the Vannankovil region. It will have 48 spans, and only six spans were finished.

Motorists cannot use the 1.4 km stretch as it was damaged completely due to the construction work at Periyanaickenpalayam. So, the authority is speeding up the flyover work.

Secretary of the Coimbatore district road safety association, M Devendran, said the NH authorities should finish the two flyovers at the earliest. Motorists travel at least 2.5 km to reach the main road due to work for the flyover at the Periyanaickenpalayam. The service road should also be newly laid at GN Mills shortly.
