First Road from Steel Slag Inaugurated at Surat

Union Minister of Steel Ram Chandra Prasad Singh inaugurated the first-ever six-lane highway road made by utilising Steel Slag at Surat in the state of Gujarat to link the port with the city.

While addressing the ceremony, the Minister spoke about the need to promote a circular economy and resource efficiency by converting all waste into wealth.

Recalling the words of PM Narendra Modi in his 15th August 2021 speech, Minister Singh made special reference to the need to promote a circular economy as the world is facing the depletion of natural resources.

In such a case, the circular economy is the need of the hour and should be made a mandatory part of our lives. The road is built with 100% use of steel processed slag and is a real example to convert waste into wealth and improve the sustainability of steel plants.

The Minister added that the use of such material in the construction of roads will not only increase the durability but also reduce the cost of construction as these slag-based materials have better properties than natural aggregates.

He added that the experience gained from this road construction shall be utilised for the development of detailed guidelines for the widespread use of steel slag in construction.
