Thalassery- Mahe bypass road to open in next 3 months for the public

Thalassery- Mahe bypass road, which is likely to fix the bottleneck drive on the Kannur stretch, is almost ready to open for the public.

Nearly 90% of the construction works is done, and it is the first four-lane bypass road in northern Kerala, which is in its final construction phase.

After opening, it would take 20 minutes to cover the stretch between Kozhikode’s Azhiyur and Kannur’s Muzhappilangad. Currently, it takes over 40 minutes to cover the stretch, and the much-awaited road will open in the next three months.

The road is 18.6 km long and is built under the National Highways Development Project for approximately Rs 1,300 crore.

The procedure for land acquisition began 40 years ago, and the construction work started in 2017.

The original plan was to finish the work within 30 months. Although, the work got delayed because of the floods in 2018 and 2019 and then the Covid-19 pandemic.

The construction work has been spearheaded by Ernakulam-based firms GHV Infra and EKK Infrastructure.

The stretch includes four long bridges, going through the rivers in Anjarakandy, Dharmadom, Mahe, and Kuyyali. Particularly for the convenience of large vehicles, there are four subways and 21 additional underpasses for ordinary vehicles.

The 270 m overbridge stretch work near Muzhappilangad is still ongoing.

On the other hand, the railway overbridge construction near Mahe Railway Station is also progressing.

The construction of 16.17 km of service roads is also advancing, and the tarring works are nearly finished.
