NHAI to install steel span to take DME over Kanpur-Delhi rail

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is on the way to install a 115 m long and over 2 k tonne steel span that would take the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME), over the Kanpur-Delhi railway line.

The steel span has been assembled at the site of the Chipiyana railway overbridge and is the final piece of the DME. It has taken much longer to complete, but the high-speed corridor is open to the public.

The steel span will be installed on the UP Gate-Dasna stretch of the 82 km DME. The whole expressway is six lanes wide but turns into a bottleneck near the Chipiyana railway overbridge since the road shrinks into four lanes. After the steel span gets installed it can be a six-lane stretch.

The overbridge weighs 2,385 tonnes and is said to be Asia’s heaviest. It would be installed with the help of a girder and the vehicles on the road will be diverted along with the train timings changed to avoid any problems.

Two out of the four lanes are likely to be shut till July 15 because of the bridge installation. The steel bridge will be installed using a girder that is 74 m long and 30 m wide. The steel span would be further installed right over the railway line. Currently, two out of the four lanes are closed by NHAI for installation.
