Transforming Rourkela Smart City with integrated solutions

Rourkela Smart City (RSCL) plans to transform Rourkela into a smart city in phases using smart technologies such as surveillance systems, traffic analytics, e-Governance, and solid waste management at a cost of around Rs 110 crore.

In the tendering process that began in April 2022, Bharat Electronics (BEL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, was awarded a contract for providing Master System Integrator (MSI) in Rourkela Smart City.

In the tender proposal, BEL confirmed that it would provide solutions from leading global manufacturers such as Honeywell for cameras, Barco for video walls, Dell for network switching and servers, and Hitachi for storage. To ensure safer roads, 500 cameras will be installed across traffic junctions with intelligent traffic lights using the Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), as well as an Emergency Call Boxesto, wireless fire alarm, and access control system, according to Mr. Kundan Chandra, Regional Head at Honeywell Security.

According to Debanuj De, Vice President at Trisim Global Solutions, a design and engineering firm specialising in Smart Cities, the RFP requirements were well drafted and the solution requirements had been optimised since the last time the tender was floated.

He also stated that the BEL solution has an ideal mix of global and local manufacturers, as it has proposed to deploy Threat Point Intelligence Solution from CrowdStrike, a global cyber security leader headquartered in Texas, USA; Motadata, based out of Ahmedabad for Enterprise and Network Management, and Trinity, an Indian company, for Integrated Command and Control Platform software.

While appreciating the RSCL for its comprehensive approach to recognising the importance of cyber security, Snigdhodev Bhattacharya, CrowdStrike's Head of Government and Defense Business, assured that CrowdStrike, in collaboration with Trisim, will ensure that cyber threat intelligence will be installed at Rourkela smart city with OEM solution in the project.
