Delhi Metro Phase IV Expansion soon to be operational

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has begun work on phase 4 of its expansion to improve connectivity throughout the national capital region. The phase IV expansion will include the construction of a 104km metro railway line connecting Maljis Park metro station to the current RK Ashram Marg metro station, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

According to current requirements, nine interchange stations are proposed in the new rail corridor between RK Ashram and Majlis Park metro stations, six of which are underground, and the other two are elevated. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is responsible for producing a detailed project report and making changes to the alignment design for the railway track.

Due to the metro region's growing population, the railway line's implementation and design will be difficult due to limited land availability and traffic congestion. As a result, DMRC needed to propose alternative designs for its construction in order to maintain safe offset distances from historical monuments.

Finalizing Designs Faster
The alignment design was prepared with the help of Google Maps through openRail designer (formerly Bentley’s Power Rail Track) by the DMRC project team to provide a comprehensive view of the design, resulting in increased efficiency and saving time in finalising the proposed alignment.

Considering the residential areas, the design was restructured by shifting and lengthening stations and tunnels; changing track alignment; deepening stations to fit clearance levels, and rotating tracks. To minimise the property acquisition, the initial track alignment was also updated by the team. This has made the proposed design accurate as it has acquired the minimum properties necessary to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.

Continuing a Commitment
With a 3D model offered by Bentley and OpenRail Designer, the team designed the alignment in less than 3 months as the application made quick results of the necessary changes.

This project will make it easier and safer for locals to travel while also reducing their environmental impact.

With the help of rooftop solar plants, the Delhi metro rail system has managed to curb the city’s pollution by 630,000 metric tonnes every year, and remove about 700,000 vehicles from the streets. This project will help to sustain a good quality of life for the people living in the surrounding areas. Since its inception in 1995, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has operated 266 trains with four, six, and eight coaches. More than 100 six-coach trains and 60 eight-coach trains are currently in service.
