Nagpur bags 2 awards for promoting cycling, ‘streets for people’

To scale up the walking and cycling habit across the nation and to accelerate street design projects, the Smart Cities Mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, in partnership with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) India, the Directorate of Urban Land Transport and Bengaluru Smart City, recently organized the first ‘Healthy Streets Capacity Building’ workshop at Bengaluru.

Over 100 city officials, chief executives, and engineers from 37 cities across India participated in in this, the first offline workshop at Bengaluru since the Covid pandemic.

Nagpur City was honoured with two national awards for the performance of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd (NSSCDCL): in the India Cycle for Change and Streets for People challenges. In both the challenges, the city bagged the Stage 1 award in the top 11 cities of India category.

To encourage green mobility and to encourage the citizen to use cycles, NSSCDCL has proposed to provide 75 bicycle stands across the city and started consultation with stakeholders from different socio-economic group to understand their requirement for cycling, said Chinmay Gotmare, chief executive officer of NSSCDCL.
