Tamil Nadu establishes highest wind power capacity

According to a written response presented by the ministry of new and renewable energy in Parliament recently, Tamil Nadu had the largest installed wind generating capacity among all the states at 9,867 megawatts (MW) as of June 30, 2022.

According to Bhagwant Khuba, minister of state for new and renewable energy, the cumulative installed capacity of wind generating installations in the country is 40,788 MW as of June 30, 2022.

According to Jyoti Gulia, founder and director of renewable energy consultancy JMK Research, the main reason for the large number of installations in Tamil Nadu is the state's good wind locations due to its coastline proximity, which results in more installations.

“It is a big industrial state as the majority of wind plants are set up under a captive or group captive model by the commercial and industrial customers,” she added.

Gujarat was ranked second behind Tamil Nadu with 9,419 MW of installed wind capacity, followed by Karnataka with 5,182 MW, Maharastra with 5012 MW, and Rajasthan with 4,495 MW.

Khuba added that according to the National Institute of Wind Energy's evaluation of India's wind resources, the country has a capacity for 695.5 GW of wind energy at a height of 120 meters.

Gujrat has the biggest wind potential of any state, with a 142,560 MW capacity at 120 meters above the earth. Gujarat is followed in terms of wind potential at the mentioned ground level by Rajasthan, which has 127,756 MW, Karnataka, which has 124,155 MW, Maharashtra, which has 98,213 MW, and Andhra Pradesh, which has 74,906 MW.
