Maharashtra unlikely to enact the Model Tenancy Act
2022-08-10
The Government of Maharashtra is unlikely to implement the Model Tenancy Act (MTA), approved by the centre last year. In the state housing development department, Maharashtra has reportedly communicated to the centre that the existing Maharashtra Rent Control Act had already been protecting the rental agreements in the state. The state housing department has reportedly said that Maharashtra has no intention to implement the act, since the existing state rental act was strong enough. Only four states have revised their tenancy laws to be in line with the MTA including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
