Target 900 MT coal production: Minister

The coal ministry intends to produce 900 million tonne (MT) this fiscal year, with national miner Coal India (CIL) producing 700 MT, according to union coal minister Pralhad Joshi.

Concerning commercial mining, the minister stated that 43 mines have been awarded in the last two years. He stated that the total annual revenue generation from the three commercial auction tranches is estimated to be Rs 42.86 billion, based on production at the aggregated Peak Rate Capacity level of 23.77 MT per annum.

The Centre in 2020 opened the coal mining sector with private companies entering the arena of commercial mining and sale of coal – 47 years after coal mining was nationalised in India. It amended the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015, in May to open the coal auction for non-mining, MSMEs and foreign companies.
