Tangedco invites bids for short-term power purchase agreements

Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has invited bids for short-term power purchase agreements to meet the anticipated power demand in October and the next summer. With the peak wind season having passed and October, the month which Tangedco officials bill as a mini-summer as it sees a spike in power demand, fast approaching, the utility has been making necessary arrangements to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

The reduced supply of domestic coal due to flooding of coal mines in other states due to seasonal rain is being cited as a reason why short term power purchase is inevitable. "Without coal supply, the thermal plants cannot be run to their full potential," said an official.

The bids were opened on August 24, and the bigger who quotes the least price would be selected to sign the agreement.
