Kozhikode Light Metro to have 14 stations

Loknath Behera, Managing Director, Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL), informed that Kozhikode Light Metro Project will be completed in a cost-effective and time-bound manner. He expressed happiness for the government’s decision to choose KMRL to execute the project. Behera stated that KMRL will initiate the project once the centre grants permission for it.

Till date, KMRL summoned two meetings in Kochi to discuss Kozhikode Light Metro Project. It is learnt that at least three months will be taken for preparing a mobility plan under a private agency. DPR will be prepared based on the mobility plan. KMRL is planning to prepare DPR after conducting a feasibility study within 8 months. A new report should be submitted to the centre for obtaining approval. A final decision will be taken on the project soon.

Most modern technology will be utilised for the implementation of the Kozhikode Light Metro Project. Hence, we plan to complete the construction in a stretch of 25 km within 2.5 years, said Behera. As per the Metro Rail Policy of the central government, the private partnership is mandatory. The Kozhikode Light Metro project master plan will be revised based on this policy. The state government has assigned KMRL to carry out related construction works including bridges.

Based on the revised DPR of 2017, Kozhikode Light Metro will cover a distance of 13.3 km from Govt. Medical College to Meenchanda. KMRL earmarked Rs 2,773 crore for the project. The skywalk will be constructed completely on pillars. A total of 14 stations will be established in Medical College, Chevayoor, Thondayad, Kottooli, New Bus Stand, KSRTC, Mananchira, Palayam, Railway Station, Pushpa Junction, Kallayi, Panniyankara, Vattakinar and Meenchanda.
