Chennai’s fourth desalination plant construction to begin

The city's fourth desalination plant, to be built near the existing Nemmeli plant in Perur, is scheduled to begin construction in January of next year. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is seeking bids for a Rs 50 billion project to construct a plant capable of treating 400 million litres of seawater. The plant would reportedly produce two 200 mld streams. This would ensure that the plant produced at least 200 mld of treated water even during the maintenance period. The plant would adhere to environmental standards, including an erosion management plan and safe brine disposal into the sea. The estimated cost of producing treated water is Rs 33.52 per kilo litre.
