At Africa Climate Week 2002 in Gabon, the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) and the United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLG Africa) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase their cooperation in decarbonising the cement and concrete industries in Africa and developing resilient, sustainable cities and communities.
The agreement outlines how the two parties would collaborate to improve stakeholder advocacy for net zero and push local governments to implement decarbonisation targets through policy actions. The GCCA and UCLG Africa will collaborate with an initial focus on the first five pilot towns to identify possibilities and problems.
