Meghalaya inks pact with NEEPCO for 3 hydropower plants

The Meghalaya government has signed an agreement with state-owned North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) to develop three hydroelectric projects of 235 MW each.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the power portfolio, said after the agreement signing ceremony that the NEEPCO, under the agreement, would set up the Umiam Stage-I, Stage-II and Stage-III hydropower plants. The Umiam Stage III is in the final stage and NEEPCO is expected to start the implementation soon.

Stage-I and Stage-II would cost around Rs 17.50 billion, with a 70% loan.

Tynsong said that he told the NEEPCO officials and engineers to ensure that the agreement should not remain on paper but should be made into reality at the earliest.
