Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium inaugurated in Odhisa

The Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium was inaugurated by Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odhisa. The stadium is one of India's largest and can accommodate over 20,000 spectators. It is built on 15 acres of land within the Biju Patnaik University of Technology campus in the Sundergarh district of Odisha and is named after Indian freedom fighter Birsa Munda. Legends like former Indian players Dilip Tirkey and Sunita Lakra have come from the Sundergarh district, which is known as one of India's hotbeds of hockey talent.

The DPR had been prepared by the PgMC, M/s TATA Consulting Engineers Limited (TCE), to transform the existing stadium into a multipurpose sports complex. The requirements for a national-standard football stadium were included in the TCE design, as also the provision of athletics, swimming, and MLCP facilities with commercial spaces. The plan makes the most of the stadium space available and will help the district of Sundergarh, known for producing great athletes, improve sports talent.

The contract to carry out the work was awarded to M/s URC Constructions Pvt Ltd, Chennai, at a cost of INR 1420 million ( comprising GST). In a short amount of time, the Birsa Munda hockey stadium and its cutting-edge amenities were built by over 1,000 workers from all over the country. A separate fitness center, a swimming pool, and accommodations constructed nearby the facilities are among the stadium's distinctive features. A connecting tunnel connects the dressing room to the practice pitch that is adjacent. In total, 225 rooms have been constructed around the stadium complex to accommodate international players and support staff.
