Greenfield Airport in Rajkot to be operational by 2023 end
The Airports Authority of India has started construction on building a new Greenfield Airport in
Rajkot, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year, to accommodate the expanding
population of Gujarat's fourth-largest city and the region's burgeoning aviation traffic. The new airport, which would cost Rs 1,405 crore to build, is intended to serve as a transit hub for residents of the state who are making international trips.
The airport, which will be built on a 1,025-hectare site, will be equipped with contemporary amenities for travellers.
The location is on the Rajkot-Ahmadabad route, around 30 kilometres from Rajkot city. The terminal building will have a total built-up area of 23,000 sqm and can accommodate 1,800 people at peak hours.
According to AAI authorities, the terminal will have cutting-edge passenger amenities, including four boarding bridges, three conveyor belts, and 20 check-in counters, as well as contemporary firefighting and fire alarm systems.
The airport will have a 3,040 metre runway that can accommodate Airbus 321 aircraft, and the apron can accommodate parking for 14 aircraft.
According to the officials, the airport's city side area is also being built to include landscaping as well as sufficient parking spaces for vehicles, taxis, and buses.
The front of the terminal building incorporates traditional components into a modern shape, drawing inspiration from Rajkot's existing palaces like the Ranjit Vilas Palace.
Through its dynamic outside face and magnificent interiors, the building will portray numerous art forms, including dandiya dance.
The outside panel work at the drop-off location of the city side kerb was influenced by Rajkot's famed golden jewellery and filigree work.
According to officials, more than 95% of the earthwork as well as paving work for the runway and other areas has been finished.
The terminal building is being constructed, and by December 2023, the airport will be open for business.
