Siemens signs locomotive order with Indian Railways

Siemens, a leading manufacturer of capital goods, announced on Monday that it had signed a contract for $260 million to produce 1,200 electric freight locomotives for the Indian Railways. The contract, which will be used for freight transportation, is Siemens's single-largest order, according to a report to the stock exchanges. According to the business, the locomotives are designed to move loads weighing 4,500 tonnes at a top speed of 120 km/h.

"The Indian Railways' mission to electrify the rails has reached a crucial turning point with the 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive. Utilizing Siemens Mobility's technology, we will construct them in India "Chief executive officer and managing director of Siemens, Sunil Mathur, said.

A 35-year full-service maintenance agreement is included in the contract, and deliveries are scheduled over an 11-year period. According to the business, the locomotives would be put together at the Indian Railways workshop in Dahod, Gujarat.

On the other hand, maintenance will be carried out at the depots of Indian Railways in Visakhapatnam, Raipur, Kharagpur, and Pune. According to Siemens, work on assembly and maintenance would be done in conjunction with Indian Railways employees.

"The locomotive procurement will assist Indian Railways in realising its ambitious plan to build the biggest green rail network in the world. Over the course of their lifetime, our locomotives will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 800 million tonnes, according to Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens.
