HAL gets approval for indigenously developed 'black boxes'

On Thursday, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. announced that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had approved the Indian Technical Standard Order (ITSO) for its domestically produced Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR).

CVR and FDR are frequently referred to as "black boxes." To aid in their recovery following an aircraft disaster, these recorders are tinted orange.

According to a notice from HAL, the ITSO is a minimum performance requirement for particular materials, parts, procedures, and appliances used on civil aircraft.

It was mentioned that the use of CVR and FDR is utilised to capture crucial flight characteristics and the acoustic environment in a crash proof memory that is afterwards used for an investigation of an aircraft incident or accident.
