Bhubaneswar civic body to establish construction waste processing unit
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to establish a construction and demolition waste processing unit capable of recycling 100 tonne of waste per day in order to ensure proper management of debris generated by various construction and demolition works. The municipal government has issued a request for proposals to select an agency that will not only set up the plant but will also be in charge of its operation and maintenance. According to BMC sources, the agency selection will be completed by the end of February, and the waste processing unit will be operational within the next three months.
The demand for housing and other public and private infrastructure has increased as the population has grown. As a result, there has been an increase in the generation of construction and demolition waste. We currently have two waste dumping sites, but a processing plant has been planned in anticipation of future demand.
Recyclable materials such as bricks, wood, metal, and tiles will be recycled at the plant.
Non-recoverable waste, such as concrete and masonry, will be sorted, segregated, crushed, and used in various road and building projects.
In accordance with the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016, the civic body has formed a separate C&D squad, which is in charge of waste management.
The BMC has also designated two sites in Patia and another near Kargil Basti near the airport for the disposal of such waste.
Furthermore, the civic body intends to designate another site in Ward 13 for the disposal of construction and demolition waste. It has also penalised various private and government agencies and individuals on a regular basis for illegally dumping waste in public areas.
