PWD anticipates finishing PMGSY roads in Assam by the end of 2023

PWD (R) is yet to finish building 133 long span bridges (LSBs) and 433 roads measuring 1336.5 km in the three phases of Assam's PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana). Started in 2000-01, Assam had 1,333 long span bridges (LSB) and 8,365 sanctioned roads measuring 26942.91 km under PMGSY-I. These projects had a sanctioned cost of Rs 190.74 billion. In accordance with PMGSY-I, PWD (Road) finished building 8,265 roads totaling 26,726 km with 1271 LSBs on February 24 of this year. Up to this point, this phase has cost Rs 189.97 billion. For this phase, PWD (R) still needs to finish 100 roads involving 73.39 km and 62 LSBs.

With 250 roads totaling 1721.48 km and 65 LSBs, PGMSY-II was launched in 2013-14 at a budgeted cost of Rs. 17.21 billion. In this phase, PWD (R) finished 222 roads totaling 1714.61 km, with 50 LSBs spending Rs 13 billion. Around 28 roads totaling 6.84 km in length and 15 LSBs are still unfinished by PWD (R) as part of this PMGSY phase.

PMGSY-III, which was launched in 2019-20, has 584 roads approved with a total length of 3755.96 km and 56 LSBs at a sanctioned cost of Rs 25.52 billion. PWD (R) spent Rs 15.40 billion to complete 279 roads totaling 2493.55 km. Under this PMGSY phase, the department still needs to finish 305 roads totaling 1256.28 km and 56 LSBs.

The majority of the projects under the three phases of PMGSY in the state are in Phase III, according to a PWD (R) official. Around 39 (285.80 km) of the 433 remaining roads, including 15 LSBs, have not yet been awarded by PWD (R). Together with awarding the roadways, progress on the other routes is brisk. By the end of 2023, we aim to have finished building all of the state's PMGSY highways.
