Grade separators and wide roads to decongest Sivaganga Main Road

State Roads department has suggested building a grade separator for 1.1 km from Gomathipuram to Aavin cooperative office as well as widening the Aavin junction and Anna bus stand junctions in an effort to relieve congestion on the Sivaganga main road. It will have a 17.25-meter-wide, four-way road. Three congested crossroads, including Apollo Hospital Junction, Aavin Junction, and Anna bus stand Junction, are located along the 2.5 kilometre Sivaganga main route that runs from Gomathipuram to Anna bus stand junction. The Apollo crossroads near Melamadai is crowded with city residents and commuters from Sivaganga who travel to the city via the outer ring road.

According to high department authorities, a grade divider will enable commuters from Sivaganga avoid the city's gridlock. S Pandian, the Madurai West Assistant Divisional Engineer, stated: "A proposal for the construction of a grade divider at an estimated cost of 160 crore has been sent for administrative permission. In a month after it has been approved, a tender will be requested.”

According to him, the remaining stretch of Sivaganga main road and Panagal Road will be enlarged from 10 to 15 metres.

Gomathipuram local P Ganesh stated, “I frequently take Sivaganga Main Road to reach my shop near Aavin intersection. To go to my shop, I had to cross two traffic lights. Melamadai and Gomathipuram inhabitants will benefit much if a bridge is built.” According to him, the grade separator will provide a long-term fix for ongoing traffic jams and one-way streets. In an effort to manage traffic between Apollo junction and Aavin junction, police recently established a one-way path.

T Nageshwaran, a Sellur-based traffic campaigner, believes a flyover would be more effective. The state government can build a flyover until Anna bus stand junction, skipping all three junctions, and arms can be extended for every location, rather than building a grade divider at Apollo junction alone. He claimed Panangal road between Aavin Junction and Anna Bus stop junction is narrower than the Sivaganga road, thus a flyover will be more suitable than a grade separator. The narrower Pangal road necessitates extensive property purchase.
