Smart Street, 40-ft-high Wipro gate construction begins in Kolkata

Near the Wipro crossing in Sector V, the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) has begun construction on a 40-foot high gate in Kolkata. A rectangular glass building with stairs and a lift leading to a sky deck will serve as the 40-foot-high gate. The deck will also have a refreshment corner.

The NDITA has also given the go-ahead to convert the road connecting Nicco Park to Sector V Ring Road via the SDF building crossing into a smart street with cycle tracks, smart bus stops, ornamental street lighting, water ATMs, and other street furnishings.

According to NDITA representatives, moving the subterranean utilities needed for the gate's construction took some time. “Piling work has started. The project is expected to be completed later this year,” said an NDITA official. The project's architect stated that they would strive to get the gate up for Durga Puja.

The project's design consultants are architects Ayan Roy and Soumyodeep Das, co-founders of the architectural firm "VBRIDGE" which created the 3D illusionist road railings in New Town earlier. A separate agency has been engaged in its construction.

From the Nicco Park intersection on the Salt Lake Bypass to the Ring Road behind the SDF headquarters, the smart street is being created. On one side of the main street, cycle lanes have already been installed and will be expanded. Additionally, bike stands akin to those in New Town are planned.
