BMC wants MIDC to recover fine from contractor
In response to a private real estate contractor destroying a pipeline that feeds water to many areas of Mumbai, the BMC has written to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) requesting payment of a fine of Rs. 750 million. Two major water pipes for Mumbai, according to BMC sources, go through Thane city and under the Eastern Expressway. A private contractor had harmed one of the pipelines during the first week of March while working on piling and excavation for an infrastructure project.
According to officials, the pipeline is 8 m below ground and was quickly repaired after the damage was discovered.
However, according to BMC authorities, they informed the contractor and Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) about the pipeline's alignment and requested that they carry out the necessary repairs with the utmost caution.
On March 30, however, the same pipeline suffered yet another damage as a result of which Mumbai's regular water delivery was interrupted.
The BMC had written to the TMC on March 30 after the pipeline had been harmed twice, requesting compensation from the contractor.
