Mangaluru International Airport Switches to Energy-Efficient Lighting

The conventional lighting system at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has gradually been replaced by an energy-efficient lighting system.

The airport has completed 100% conversion of lights with the new lighting system, according to a release from the MIA, by replacing 1,111 conventional lights dispersed across several functional areas with as many LED lights.

The switch will result in annual energy savings for the airport of 188,558.96 kWH. The airport will save 1.17 lakh kWH annually by using 752 LED lights at the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) building area, where the biggest savings would be observed. The MIA will save 56,467 kWH annually with 261 LED lights in the new integrated terminal building and 14,673 kWH annually by replacing the 98 conventional lights with LED lights in the airside, the old terminal building, and the NATS area. The changeover will contribute to a reduction in annual CO2 emissions of 148.962 tonnes, including 92.761 tonnes in the NATS region. It is widely acknowledged that the main cause of global climate change is CO2 emissions.

The airport proactively requested a controlled lighting system that will allow it to turn off lights when not in use. The usage of timers also guarantees that the street lights are turned on at predetermined times, according to the press release.
