Demand for Clean Hydrogen in US to Grow to 50 MMT by 2050

The National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, recently released by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), predicts that the demand for clean hydrogen (H2) in the United States will increase by 10 million metric tonnes (MMT) annually by the end of the decade and by 20 MMT, 20 MMT, and 50 MMT, respectively, by 2040 and 2050.

The roadmap prioritises three major areas to support the use of clean hydrogen across important national sectors: lowering the cost of clean hydrogen, planning its use in applications that would provide the greatest benefits, and developing regional networks for clean H2 production in the nation.

By utilising clean hydrogen to decarbonize many industries, the roadmap creates potential routes. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), passed in August, and the Infrastructure Law will go into effect in 2021.
