NHAI to revamp Thakurdwara flyover for GT road decongestion
2023-06-21

The Thakurdwara flyover over the busy and congested GT Road may have to be dismantled for the revamp of the 15km stretch. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is set to redevelop the stretch, will undertake the project in two phases, working on the 3.6-km Lal Kuan to Dadri Road rail overbridge at first and then the 11.27-km stretch from the overbridge to the Delhi Gate via Meerut Road tri-section, officials said.
“In March, Union minister VK Singh held a meeting with PWD and NHAI officials and it was decided to develop the GT Road stretch in two phases instead of four that was proposed earlier,” Kuldeep Singh, an associate of the minister, said.
According to the proposed redevelopment plan, shared by the office of the VK Singh, the existing Thakurdwara flyover will be dismantled and a new flyover will be constructed along it.
“The Thakurdwara flyover, which was constructed two decades ago, connects the Meerut tri-section with the old city. It has somewhat become a liability today as a two-lane structure occupies a lot of space and the road beneath it is crammed partly due to paucity of land and partly because of encroachment. It has been now decided that it is time to do away with the flyover or upgrade it to four lanes,” said an official from GDA.
In the second phase, an underpass at the DME interchange has been planned which also includes an elevated corridor over the Chaudhary Mod and Railway Road.
