ICT to Prepare DPR for Assam's First Underwater Tunnel

The tendering activity for the Gohpur – Numaligarh tunnel project in Assam is currently in progress. The tender for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was opened on July 4, 2023, and only a single bidder, Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt. Ltd., has submitted a bid. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 6500 crore.

The DPR will assess the feasibility of the project and provide detailed engineering and financial information. Once the DPR is completed, the project will be tendered for construction.

The Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater tunnel project is a major infrastructure development project in Assam. The tunnel will be the first of its kind in the state, and it is expected to have a significant impact on the region's economy and connectivity.

The tunnel will connect the two banks of the Brahmaputra River, which is a major transportation bottleneck in Assam. Currently, the only way to cross the river is by ferry or bridge, which can be time-consuming and unreliable, especially during the monsoon season. The tunnel will provide a reliable and efficient alternative, and it is expected to reduce travel times and improve connectivity between the two banks of the river.

Each tunnel with a diameter of 11.5m carrying 2 lanes will be built using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) about 22 meters below Brahamaputra’s riverbed. The total length of the project (tunnels & approach roads) will be approximately 34.6 km long connecting Gohpur village on NH-52 and Numaligarh village on NH-715.

NHIDC had invited tenders for this consultancy contract in May 2023 with an unknown estimate and 730 day (2 year) completion deadline.

Brief Scope: Consultancy Services for preparation of Detailed Project Report and for Pre- Construction activities towards Construction of 4-lane Tunnel Connectivity across River Brahmaputra between Gohpur (on NH-15) and Numaligarh (on NH-715) in the State of Assam.

The project site is located in the districts of Biswanath and Golaghat in Assam. The tunnel will be approximately 34.664 kilometers long, and it will have a four-lane carriageway.
