Relief for Thika tenancy applicants in Kolkata

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) released a thika land policy on Friday with the intention of streamlining the ownership situation and making building on such land easier.

The KMC thika cell will now provide a valid heirship title to heirs of tenants of thika land who have passed away within 15 days of the application for the same, according to mayor Firhad Hakim, who outlined the benefits of the new policy. Further, KMC will grant a lessee title to any tenant of the thika land who applies and submits the required paperwork. A KMC official claims that after a renter of thika property obtains lessee status, s/he will be permitted to construct a residence without limitations on the building's height.

Currently, KMC limits the height of buildings constructed on thika property. "A tenant of a thika land may apply to our thika cell at the headquarters with adequate documentation supporting his or her claim to be a tenant if the tenant seeks a lessee status. The petitions will be carefully examined before being sent to a higher court made up of top state officials, including the chief secretary. According to a KMC official, they will decide whether to grant the applicants the lessee status.
