TCS to overhaul government’s e-Marketplace for efficiency

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a prominent IT company, has secured a contract from the government to overhaul and develop an updated version of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), a public procurement platform.

GeM is a comprehensive online marketplace catering to central and state government entities, along with public sector undertakings, facilitating transparent and efficient procurement of common-use goods and services. The platform's Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) surpasses Rs 2 trillion, encompassing purchases by more than 70,000 buyer organizations from over 0.65 million sellers and service providers, including over 8 million medium and small enterprises.

The revamped GeM aims to be an all-encompassing platform for government procurement, streamlining ease of doing business and ensuring transparency. GeM CEO P K Singh highlighted TCS's role as the system integration partner and expressed confidence in TCS's extensive experience and dedication to crafting a world-class solution.

TCS's approach to redesigning GeM involves embracing cutting-edge technologies such as cloud neutrality, interoperability, and a multilingual and open-source-based architecture. The new platform will be constructed based on e-commerce and e-marketplace principles, boasting a multi-tenancy, multi-rule, and open-API-based structure. It will be designed to accommodate an anticipated six-fold increase in GMV over the next six years.

The upgraded GeM will harness data analytics for projection forecasting and supply chain management enhancements. Moreover, advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies will be employed to identify potential fraud, thereby enhancing transparency in operations.

TCS's engagement in revamping the GeM platform aligns with India's ongoing efforts to bolster digital transformation and create a more efficient and streamlined public procurement ecosystem.
