India's impressive 33% emission reduction
India's remarkable progress in reducing emissions intensity has garnered global attention, as the nation manages to decouple economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. According to officials familiar with the latest assessment submitted to the United Nations, India's emissions rate dropped by an impressive 33% over a span of 14 years. This substantial reduction was fueled by the surge in renewable energy production and a notable expansion of forest cover. The Third National Communication (TNC) report, prepared by Indian authorities, demonstrated that the country is well-positioned to meet its commitment under the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to slash emissions intensity by 45% from the 2005 level by 2030. India's annual reduction rate in emissions rose from 1.5% to 3% between 2014 and 2019, largely attributed to governmental efforts in promoting renewable energy sources. This advancement could also alleviate international pressure on India to curb coal usage.
