Pune Metro Expands to Ramwadi and Swargate After Successful Inauguration

MahaMetro intends to finalize the construction of the Metro lines up to Ramwadi and Swargate within the upcoming months, following the successful inauguration of services on two segments on August 1.

Ramwadi and Swargate represent the terminal stations for two separate Metro routes, sections of which have been operational since the preceding year. The initial two portions of the project, namely PCMC-Phugewadi and Vanaz-Garware College, were initiated on March 6, 2022. On August 1 of this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated services on two additional stretches, namely Phugewadi-Civil Court and Garware College-Ruby Hall, during his visit to Pune.

Upon the completion of the remaining segments on the two Metro routes, individuals will have the ability to journey from Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate. This expansion of services to Ramwadi and Swargate will extend the Metro's coverage from the current 24km to 33km," according to a statement from a MahaMetro official.

The official also indicated that supplementary workforce has been assigned to finalize the outstanding tasks on the Bund Garden to Ramwadi section by October and the Civil Court to Swargate stretch by December.

"The Ruby Hall-Ramwadi stretch is fully elevated and features prominent stations including Bund Garden, Yerawada, Kalyaninagar, and Nagar Road. Conversely, the Civil Court-Swargate section is entirely underground, with major stations situated in Kasba Peth, Mandai, and Swargate," elucidated the official.

An additional MahaMetro representative highlighted that the work on the elevated stretch until Ramwadi was expected to conclude sooner, while acknowledging that underground construction is more intricate and time-consuming. Hemant Sonawane, the executive director (PR) of MahaMetro, affirmed that the authority would follow a comparable procedure of obtaining safety certification for the extended sections before commencing operations.

Regular commuters expressed that the expansion of Metro services to Swargate and Ramwadi would lead to increased passenger traffic. Kasba Peth resident Satish Agarwal remarked, "Swargate serves as a central hub with an adjacent bus terminus. This would enable people to use the Metro to reach Swargate and catch outstation buses."

IT professional Ashwin Rane from the Nagar Road locality opined that the Metro should be further extended to Kharadi and Wagholi.
