Thane Residential Buildings: Top Energy Users and Emitters

Thane's residential structures lead in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions Thane, often referred to as the lake city, might experience severe weather conditions in the future due to high greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from residential buildings and the public transport system. This projection comes from an analysis by the National Institute of Urban Affairs, under the Union housing ministry, and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), South Asia. The study was based on energy consumption patterns from 15 smart cities, including Thane. Residential buildings in Thane are the top energy consumers, accounting for 47% of the total, and are the highest greenhouse gas emitters at 43%. The city's public transport, especially buses, contributes 36.9% to the emissions. However, the report suggests that with "corrective action," emissions in Thane could be reduced by 22% by 2025-26. Recommendations include mandatory rooftop solar installations, energy audits, and the introduction of electric buses.
