Approval: Railway Doubling Project connecting Guntur-Bibinagar in AP
2023-08-21

The recent decision by the Union cabinet to approve two railway line doubling projects is expected to bring about significant reductions in travel time between Chennai and Hyderabad, as well as between Chennai and Kolkata.
These strategic endeavours are part of a collection of seven multi-track projects, with a combined cost of Rs 325 billion.
One of the sanctioned projects entails the doubling of the 239 km railway line connecting Guntur to Bibinagar in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative aims to cut down the Chennai-Hyderabad route by 76 km, resulting in faster travel times and enabling the potential for additional train services.
Simultaneously, the proposed introduction of a third line on the Cuttack-Vizianagaram route is set to tackle delays and facilitate the operation of more trains on this crucial route.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the doubling of the Guntur-Bibi Nagar line will necessitate an investment of Rs 32.38 billion. This move is expected to improve railway operations, particularly the Vande Bharat services, along the Chennai-Hyderabad route. Vaishnaw highlighted the ample opportunities for express and goods trains on this route, emphasising its growth potential.
He stated, "Currently functioning as a single-line section, this route faces congestion. The Bibi Nagar-Guntur section accommodates just one pair of trains bound for Chennai. The anticipated benefits include a significant reduction of over one hour in travel time for passenger trains heading to Chennai. Moreover, the cost per goods shipment will decrease by approximately Rs 3-5 lakh, leading to increased demand due to its suitability for transporting cement and other goods."
Similarly, the approval for the Rs 50 billion third line project on the Cuttack-Vizianagaram stretch is a notable advancement. The new line, spanning Nergundi and Barang (22 km) and Khurda Road and Vizianagaram (363 km) on the Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section, is projected to reinforce the crucial Chennai-Kolkata route.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasised, "This development will be particularly advantageous for the east-south trunk route from Chennai to Kolkata. Furthermore, efforts are underway to formulate a comprehensive project report for the Vizag to Chennai line."
With these substantial investments in railway infrastructure, the Union cabinet's decision is poised to usher in a new era of more efficient and well-connected rail travel, unlocking immense potential for economic and regional growth.
