City launches Rs 200M housing project for rehabilitation

The urban landscape is set for transformation as the City Corporation embarks on a pivotal housing endeavour, allocating Rs 200 million for a housing project in Muttathara. This initiative not only seeks to rehabilitate residents of Vikalanga Colony but also caters to beneficiaries enlisted under the LIFE Mission.
The project, unfolding over a spacious 2-acre expanse, is currently inviting expressions of interest from non-project management consultancy (PMC) agencies. The prospective Rs 200 million housing scheme aims to uplift living conditions and ensure a secure haven for approximately 100 families residing in the challenging environment of Vikalanga Colony. Moreover, beneficiaries associated with the LIFE Mission from Vallakadavu and adjacent wards are also slated for relocation to the upcoming complex.
Under the draft blueprint, each apartment unit will span an area of 550 sq ft, fostering comfortable living for the occupants. While the housing project was originally contemplated for the local fishermen community, this new venture seeks to address pressing housing needs, as the original plot had been earmarked for other purposes.
This development is particularly noteworthy as it seeks to address a long-standing issue. Vikalanga Colony, a settlement for disabled individuals established around 48 years ago, is set to receive a fresh lease of life. The housing project will offer a much-needed uplift, transcending its original purpose to create a contemporary urban haven.
In parallel, another housing initiative for the fishermen community is underway, spanning eight acres at Muttathara. This project promises 400 flats, each comprising a hall, a kitchen, and two bedrooms. The fisheries department, overseeing the Punartham housing scheme, has already completed housing units at Karode and Beemapally as part of this scheme.
With these developments, the urban landscape of Muttathara is poised to witness not only infrastructural rejuvenation but also the empowerment of marginalised communities through dignified living spaces.
